Grass Carp are herbivorous fish which have been introduced to waterways around the world for aquatic weed control. The young fish will eat almost anything but as they get larger, they will eat more and more soft weeds, which is why they are regularly used as a biological weed control. They won’t eat hard weeds such as reeds and lilies. Given space, food and time they will grow pretty big but in small ponds they grow to the space and food available to them, which makes them ideal for weed control in small ponds.

Unlike common and mirror carp or ornamental Koi, Grass Carp need running water to spawn and will leave a pond via an overflow or inflow to find these conditions given half a chance. The authorities are concerned that they could spread and establish breeding populations in the wild, which has resulted in restrictions on what sort of pond you can stock them into.

As a result we are licensed to sell them for introduction into Garden Ponds only

A garden pond is defined as fully enclosed (no water running out of it), less than one acre in size, not fished and in the grounds of a residential property. If your water fits this description, we can sell them to you. We will ask you about this when you call. If your water doesn’t fit in with this definition of a garden pond, then sadly we are not allowed to sell them to you.

Oddly enough, it was the Environment Agency or their fore runners who used to stock these fish out into open waters and canals to control weeds. How things have changed….

Grass carp are ideally suited to small ponds and will happily get along with all other species of ornamental fish.

We sell two varieties. The wild variety, commonly known as green grass carp, or the albino variety, which has the same colouration orange colouration as a Golden Orfe. If you want your fish to keep their heads down and get on with weed clearance, buy the green ones. If you want to see your fish swimming around the pond like any other ornamental fish, buy the albino fish.

Don’t worry about the size of these fish. While they are small, they are not going to eat a lot of weed in the short term but they grow really quickly and will make a real contribution to controlling weed levels. If you are interested in larger fish, they are often available and will have more of an immediate impact. Please contact us to discuss your needs and we will try utmost for you.
